Products from Sumitomo Drive Technologies play a vital role in water and wastewater treatment applications around the world.
Delivering drinking-quality water to consumers, keeping swimming pool water clean, and moving wastewater through various treatment processes all rely on continuous duty, energy-efficient pumps capable of performing in the most arduous conditions.
High-performance pumps need high-performance drive technologies.
From enclosed gearing designed to drive wastewater treatment equipment; watertight electric motors used in submersible pumps; variable frequency drives that deliver smooth, continuous, and efficient control of pump motors; and integrated drive solutions – our products are all backed by extensive technical expertise helping alleviate pressure on this critical industry.
Optimising pump performance for the water and wastewater industry
Gears and Gearmotors for Water and Wastewater Applications
The proprietary CYCLO® technology inside Cyclo gears works by sharing the load across its reducer components - making them more compact, durable and precise than conventional cog gears. Cyclo gears operate on compression rather than shear, enabling them to offer high structural load capacity. This is extremely beneficial in demanding continuous-duty applications typically found in the water industry.
Electric Motors for Water and Wastewater Applications
Submersible pumps require high-performance, robust, energy efficient, watertight motors that provide continuous power. We provide a wide range of IE2, IE3 and IE4 asynchronous and permanent magnet synchronous motors widely used in water applications.
The motor shaft and flange can be customised to meet specific environmental requirements - including being painted with corrosion protection and sealed throughout to eliminate any possibility of liquid ingress.
Variable Frequency Drives for Water and Wastewater Applications
Optidrive Eco AC variable frequency drives are specifically designed for use in pump applications and all feature Invertek’s innovative Optiflow capability as standard. Optiflow enables multiple Optidrive Eco drives to be controlled by one master VFD without the need for a PLC - meaning required pressure and flow levels can be maintained regardless of how many pumps are in use. When demand increases, additional pumps are automatically brought on stream to assist and are switched off again when no longer needed. This feature is highly beneficial in water supply applications which experience regularly fluctuating demand.
Avoiding pump downtime is critical in the water and wastewater industry. Optidrive Eco functionality ensures optimum pump performance.

Integrated Drive Solutions for Water and Wastewater Applications
Sumitomo Drive Technologies’ wide ranging product specialisms can also be combined to provide standard and customised integrated drive solutions. Standard products used in the water industry include the HP Combi and HP Integral - a PM motor and combined drive, or integrated drive respectively. Both are IES2 rated and are available in a dedicated ‘Flow’ option specifically designed for pump applications, with functions optimised for energy efficiency.
